The Rauschpfeife differs from the shawm in a substantial detail. The reed is not taken into the mouth for playing. It is held inside the reed-cap where it is protected against damage. This instrument is quite loud, because the reed is not held and controlled by the lips of the player.
The instrument I used here was developed and made by the instrument maker Friedrich Schlütter. The design does not follow historic patterns. It is rather a realisation of Mr. Schlütters own ideas. |
