A great number of early flutes had surely not been made of wood but of reed. The natural shape of the reedgras is the tube which had simply to be completed with the mouthpiece and the fingering holes.
This is why I included a bamboo- (actually reed) flute in this collection of historic sounds. The featured instrument was made in India, where the construction and playing of reed flutes has a long standing tradition. |
